It has been a busy few months in the Kerry Biosphere. We thoroughly enjoyed our Autumn Garthering back in September, a great way to kickstart the autumn. The diversity of events added extra interest in this years efforts, from guided bird walks, beach walks, and woodland outings, to upland and mountainous recreation walks and creative entomology. Fast forward two months and are Rainwater Planter initiative is well underway, our Bats of Irelands colouring books have been printed and have been a roaring success, our Lesser Horseshoe Bat sculpture is on tour, and our primary schools bat calendar is in print.
Our Creative Art to Save a Species initiative was funded by Creative Ireland and Kerry County Council Arts. Our exciting initiative was three pronged with commissioning of a Lesser Horseshoe Bat sculpture, creation of the bats colouring book, and our calendar competition. Meanwhile, our friends at the Killarney Men's Shed have been busy designing and developing three rainwater planters for distribution in the Killarney region. We are thrilled to confirm that Féidhlim Harty (FH Wetland Systems) will be joining us for webinars and in-person workshops over the next few months. We will begin with a webinar which will be scheduled for later in November.
In other news, we have been busy collated potentially interested groups to join in on a webinar to provide a background on the Biosphere and to help us form an Advisory Council for the reserve. The council will be a networking opportunity between community groups and the Biosphere. Follow our social media and this webiste for more information on upcoming events in the Biosphere.
Lastly, Biosphere Officer, Brendan Kirwan has been visiting primary schools in the Biosphere and beyond delivering educational packs to the schools. The packs are filled with informative booklets, books, bird ID swatches, and of course bat colouring books!
